Greetings from all of us at Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center-

The snow has blanketed the prairies and decorated the pines. Carpenter Nature Center is a scenic winter wonderland just waiting to be explored. As you hurriedly prepare for a busy holiday season our wildlife is hunkering down for a long winter’s rest. The Green Frogs and Northern Leopard Frogs in the wetland survive the winter nestled down in the mud and debris on the bottom of the pool breathing very slowly through their skin. A few of Minnesota’s other 14 species of frog and toad are bedded down under the leaf litter and snow cover, where up to 65% of their body fluid safely freezes during the winter. Bird species that rely on insects have migrated south, yet rarities can still be seen, as you will read in the story of CNC’s Summer Tanager. The energetic Black-capped Chickadee stays in Minnesota during the winter, surviving by lowering its own body temperature as much as 15 degrees to conserve energy. It may be difficult to believe, but some birds such as Snowy Owls actually migrate TO Minnesota and Wisconsin for the winter. Three of Minnesota’s seven native bat species have migrated south, but the remaining four species survive by hibernating and living on their fat reserves, slowing their breathing and heart rate, and dropping their body temperatures nearly to the air temperature of their caves. Whatever methods you employ to weather the winter, don’t forget to get outdoors, enjoy the sunshine and all the unique wonders that winter in Minnesota brings. THANK YOU to everyone who helped Carpenter Nature Center raise over $12,000 to support environmental education and habitat conservation. Sixty-one donors made gifts to CNC throughwww.GiveMN.org on Give-to-the-Max Day and the full $1,000 anonymous matching challenge was received. CNC’s executive director was featured live on KARE 11 that morning and to keep it fun, Jim Fitzpatrick pledged to kiss a toad if over $5,000 was raised and dye his beard green if over $10,000 was raised. Dana Nelson, GiveMN’s executive director, had the honor of holding CNC’s American Toad for the kiss. CNC’s volunteer bird banders helped Jim dye his beard “Give-to-the-Max Green” that Friday morning. A photo of Jim can be seen on CNC’s facebook pages and we are working on adding it to the website.

GiveMN is available year-round to make secure, online gifts to CNC via credit card and it is one of the simplest ways to become a “sustaining” monthly donor. The Apple Shack is CLOSED for the season

A hearty THANK YOU to everyone who visited the Apple Shack in 2011

The Apple Shack doors have closed on another successful season. Thank you for supporting Carpenter Nature Center through your purchases of apples, pumpkins, jams and jellies. Congratulations to the crew of Apple Shack staff and volunteers who worked diligently to grow and harvest high-quality, eco-friendly produce. At the end of the season an annual tradition is to donate any unsold produce to Second Harvest Heartland, which distributes food quickly and efficiently to nearly 1,000 food shelves, soup kitchens, shelters and programs in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. This is just one more way Carpenter Nature Center partners with other non-profit organizations to help serve our community and extend the reach of our limited resources. Although the apples and squash are gone, there will be some jams, jellies, syrup and salad dressings available for sale at the Visitor Center throughout the winter.

Weird and wonderful wildlife: A Summer Tanager in winter and Snowy Owls “snowbirding” in the Midwest?

On November 14^th CNC’s naturalist Alan Maloney spotted a “weird bird”. The beautiful reddish-orange bird turned out to be a Summer Tanager, a species designated a “rare regular” by the Minnesota Ornithologists’ Union. There are only a very few Summer Tanagers spotted in Minnesota each year and the northern limit of their range is only southern Iowa. At this time of year, this “bee and wasp specialist” should be on its way to South America for the winter. The bird was most recently seen on Friday, December 2^nd and is often found in the conifers near the raccoon sculpture close to the administration or feeding on the bittersweet berries near the Apple Shack. Carpenter Nature Center hosts a few breeding pairs of its relative, the striking Scarlet Tanager. An interesting side-note is that recent studies have shown that North American Tanagers are NOT related to the other 300+ species of tanagers found in the Neo-tropics. North American tanager species are actually more closely related to Cardinals! Perhaps that explains why CNC’s Summer Tanager was often observed hanging out with our resident Northern Cardinals?

This winter season is already providing nature enthusiasts with a treat. Large, white treats with talons and piercing yellow eyes. Snowy Owls live in a delicate balance with their primary food source, the lemming throughout their circumpolar range. Lemming populations go through a dramatic reduction every 3-4 years, called a “population crash”. In a good year a pair of Snowy Owls can raise a dozen chicks, feeding them up to 2,000 lemmings before the chicks are able to hunt on their own! When lemmings are scarce the owls might not even attempt to nest. During such a year, these huge owls head south for the winter to find more food, sometimes “irrupting” as far south as Texas and Florida! There seems to be some debate as to whether our current owl irruption was sparked by a low lemming population, or an overly successful Snowy Owl breeding season. Whatever the cause, there are snowy owls being spotted all over the region. A local bird watcher spotted a Snowy Owl near 100^th St and Neal in Southern Washington County this past weekend. When observing Snowy Owls it is actually possible to determine whether you are looking at a male owl or a female by the amount on black barring. Experienced birders can even “age” the birds by the extent and pattern of the barring as male and female Snowy Owls get lighter with age. If you are heading out to look for wild Snowy Owls and are fortunate enough to find one, please enjoy the bird from a distance for the owl’s safety. There have been a number of Snowy Owls in our area that have died due to starvation and there will likely be many others killed by cars. Any additional stresses your activities bring to these magnificent creatures could end up being a matter of life and death for the owls. Enjoy a winter night under the moonlight with a relaxing snowshoe hike at Carpenter Nature Center. Warm up by the fire after the hike and enjoy some fresh popcorn and hot apple cider. Snowshoes provided or bring your own; no experience necessary. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear warm boots; recommended for ages 10 and up. WHO HIBERNATES?

Friday, December 9^th 10:00-11:00 a.m.

Why not visit CNC with your children or grandchildren to enjoy the “WHO HIBERNATES?” Story time?As usual the program is 10:00-11:00 a.m. and incorporates a story, a nature walk, and an art or craft project. The program fee is $5 per child or $3 for “Friends of CNC”. There is no charge for accompanying adults. The Preschool Story Time series has been partially funded through support from Target.

SONGBIRD BANDING

Friday, December 23^rd 8:30 a.m. – noon

Or stop by and visit the bird banders on FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23^rd between 8:30 and noon to watchBIRD BANDING and to learn about the many songbirds that brave our Minnesota winters. During the colder months the banders put away the Mist Nets and use Potters Traps to catch songbirds, which are then banded and released. At this time of year we typically band more ground feeding birds, such as Slate-colored Juncos and a few Blue Jays and Cardinals. As always this is a FREE program but donations of bird seed and suet are welcomed.

Volunteer opportunities:

We are still looking for some volunteers in the animal care area, with open shifts for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday. This is a fun activity to do on your own or with a friend. Duties include critter feeding anytime from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you are more interested in something you can do from home, or in the office, we have something for everyone from brochure design to greeting visitors to data entry, social media updates, mailings and more. Come and join our fun, friendly family. You will be glad you did.

Financial donations to CNC are generally 100% tax-deductible and you can rest assured that every dollar you donated is stretched as far as it can go to reach as many students as possible. Your official CNC Thank You Letter will provide the proof you need to claim your donation as a tax-deduction if you itemize. Fall in the St Croix River Valley

Fall in the St Croix River Valley already?

Wow can't believe it is the first day of fall and when we looked out the window this morning and across the St Croix River, we could not believe our eyes. The colors are already starting to pop. Our Longworth Room is quickly becoming our most popular room in the fall season, as it's private deck affords our guests views of the river valley. There really is nothing like cozying up in one of our robes for your wake up tray on that balcony on a cool autumn morning with a warm beverage, watching the eagles soar over the river.

We really should not leave out the Silhouette Room, which although has no view of the St Croix, boasts it's welcoming, warm, private hot tub to enjoy as the temperatures start to drop a bit.

As for activities this time of year;

Valley Vineyard is busy pulling in this years harvest and the tasting room is the place to be no matter what the weather.

All the orchards and pumpkin patches (and we are very close to many) are in full bloom and fruit picking is a whole "bunch" of fun.

We are offered great rates to pass along to our guests at Clifton Highland's Golf Course, just 5 minutes away, as well as discount tickets to Afton Alps Golf Course only 11 miles from our door.

Did we mention birds? Plentiful as they eat us out of house and home getting ready for the change in weather. They love our feeders and our guests love to watch them as they enjoy breakfast on one of our covered porches.

Snowshoeing outside the Minneapolis St Paul area seems to have never been better. We have had above average snowfall this year which has made it ideal. Having a bed and breakfast in Prescott really affords us the best of all worlds in the winter time.

Yesterday Deb and I decided to go have a little outdoor winter adventure. So after our guests left for the day to go skiing at

Afton Alps (only 11 miles away), we loaded up our snowshoes and headed to Carpenter Nature Center (1 mile away as the crow flies). 5 minutes after leaving the Arbor Inn, we were on the trails. Talk about awesome....With over 7 miles of trails, not to mention endless option on snowshoes, you can really have a blast. It was a holiday and we did not see one other person while we were out.

We should also mention that there is no fee for the use of this great nature area.

So if a nice quiet day with nature sounds like fun, strap on some snow shoes after a four course breakfast at the inn and head across the river. Heck, we could even tell you how to get there on foot if you really feel adventurous.

Almost forgot to mention just how great the hot tub felt when we got back home.

Prescott DAZE - Welcome to fall?

Yes it's that time again and while some people love to see the temps dip and the fall colors along the St Croix River Valley start to pop, others of us who just can't get enough of the warm weather. Well this weekend bring a happy tone to Prescott, WI with it's annual Prescott Daze event. This year is even more fired up as we are honoring our volunteer fire department for 150 years of service.

If your here for a Friday night stay you can enjoy the street dance with live music by Orange Whip . On Saturday amongst all the other events, there is a Firemen's Dance at the fire hall featuring live music by Mid-Life Crisis.

This just in: We have had a last minute cancellation in our most popular room (Silhouette). This is perfect for mending you boogey muscles after the big dance. Our Silhouette Room features a king sized bed, two person shower and best of all an awesome PRIVATE outdoor hot tub for two.

St Croix River Hosts the Pinta and Nina

We will have some special passers by August 5th when the Pinta and the Nina make their way up the Mississippi River Vqalley and then up the St Croix River to Hudson WI, where they will be docking and allowing access aboard. These two ships are lifesize replicas of Columbus Ships. It's amazing that they will be making their way right past our place. We can't imagine what it will be like to watch them sail by.

Just a quick 10 minutes from the Arbor Inn is this super friendly winery called Valley Vineyard. They are relatively new and we just discovered them this year. Who knew that such a fantastic winery could be right in our back yard. They are also part of the Great river Road Wine Trail and a DO NOT MISS for sure , along the way.

Bed and Breakfast with Private Hot Tub

Bed and Breakfast's with private hot tubs are not so easy to find.

After a reminder this morning we know why.

I (John) woke up much earlier than usual and while I was checking email had a thought:

No one is in the Silhouette Room and how good would it feel to be in that private hot tub with the rain falling down. So I went upstairs and woke Deb up to see if she wanted to join me. With the dogs in their kennels we snuck down, out in the inn and into our Silhouette Room. You could hear it pouring rain outside but that just made it even better. Since it is completely private we stripped down and jumped in. Wow I must say that it does not get much better than taking a hot tub in the rain. (Well maybe in the snow would top it) We forget how nice it is to wake up and go for a soak and were quickly reminded why the Silhouette Room is our most popular room all year long.

Next time we look for a bed and breakfast to run away to I think we will make sure it is one with a private hot tub. Or maybe we'll just stay at home and visit our own inn.

The 2010 Farm Technology Days event is in our own Pierce County July 20th - 22nd. The location is just south of River Falls and north of Prescott Wisconsin.

It is estimated that the event could draw upwards of 80,000 visitors.

Birders and snowshoer paradise near Minneapolis/St Paul! Here are a few local tidbits of nearby events.

At nearby Point Douglas (4 blocks from the inn), a male Harlequin Duck has returned for the third winter in a row, and this year he was joined by two Long-Tailed Ducks. These coastal species do not usually winter here and have brought many birdwatchers to the area.

It's that time of year again when the wine bottles come out and we get to enjoy some time chatting with our guests (those who want to) and sipping some wines.

Once again this year we have some very nice wines from Wisconsin's very own Von Stiehl Winery.

We don't just save the wine tastings until the weekends. It's available every night of the week as long as we have guests that let us know they are interested. Don't worry we are not wine snobs, we just love good wine and good company.

This BLOG about "Fall In The St Croix River Valley" is written with both a happy and sad face. Happy to see the gorgeous views that the change in weather brings to our area. Sad to see the boats start to come out of the river knowing that it will soon be frozen over. Prescott is a fantastic place to start, finish or stop during your trip to take in the stunning fall colors along the Great River Road. Being at the confluence of the two beautiful rivers (the Mississippi and the St Croix), we are so fortunate to be right in the midst of it all. One can leave the big city and feel like they are worlds away in only a matter of minutes.

If just driving around taking in the colors is not enough, Prescott offers other options.
Just minutes away from Kinnikinnick State Park and Carpenter Nature Center where miles of trails and breathtaking views await you. Many orchards surround our city with fresh fruit just waiting to be picked. If all that hiking or fruit picking has you feeling a bit parched, just a short stroll downtown offers visitors many options to quench their thirst. Prescott also has some great restaurants as well. Best Fireworks Show from Stillwater to Hasting to Minneapolis-Saturday, July 4

We are looking forward to the best firework show again (from Stillwater to Hastings to Minneapolis) right from our firepit in our tiny town of Prescott. We are reminscing about our adventure last year on July 4th, sitting around the fire pit with our guests, wine in hand, watching the fantastic firework show from our own back yard! We have some of the best neighbors in town who duel to show off their collection of fireworks. Last year the show lasted about 1 1/2 hours and it was quite a competition that was enjoyed by all. Ellsworth, Wisconsin Cheese Curd Festival - June 25-28, 2009

Welcome back to the annual cheese curd festival in the cheese curd capital of Wisconsin..Ellsworth! The festival begins on June 25th and extends to the 28th. The entire schedule can be found on the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce website at http://www.ellsworthchamber.com/ but we can give you a short run-down of events and artists. Thursday, June 25th the beer and cheese curd stands open at 6:00 pm for those who are camping or staying locally for the festivities. There is live music starting Thursday night and there are preformances most of the weekend. Saturday night draws artists like Rhett Akins, Andy Griggs, Ash Bowers and Danielle Peck. Concert pricing and seating can also be found on the website. There is also a golf tournament, petting zoos, beach wrestling, craft & flea markets and many more events. We are thrilled to have the cheese curd capital of Wisconsin less than 20 minutes away from us. Lodging for the Benefit Ride For Faith's Lodge on June 27, 2009

The Arbor Inn offers great lodging for the third annual benefit ride of Faith's Lodge on June 27, 2009. Just a short ride down the hill will bring you to the starting point. Point Douglas Park is across the river from Prescott, WI. The ride will be scenic and relaxed, winding through western Wisconsin ending in Webster, WI for lunch at the Webster Fairgrounds (7421 W Apple). The ride will cover 145 miles and take approximately three hours with a stop for gas and to stretch. The cost is $25 for a single rider or $35 for two-up. You can register at www.emttour.org. As in the past, 100% of the proceeds will go directly to Faith's Lodge. All other expenses are covered through donations to the Electrical Motorcycle Tour. The Arbor Inn will help cover your cost of the ride by reducing our room rate by $25.00 if you mention this blog. We also offer covered parking for your bikes for a stress free evening.
Faith’s Lodge is a place for families with seriously ill children or that have recently suffered the loss of a child. This tranquil retreat provides a place for solitude or the ability to connect with other families facing the same experiences. The ride will not be stopping at Faith's Lodge this year now that it is open. There will be families staying on site but will benefit those families and future families of the Lodge.

We provide massages for those tired legs and relaxation, along with pampering you with a 4 course breakfast. Carpenter Nature Center is less than a 5 minute drive from The Arbor Inn. You can choose your race (2K Fun Run, 5K Run/Walk, 10K or 1/2 marathon) or just come to watch and cheer for the runners. The 5K, 10K and 1/2 marathon all start at 8:00 a.m. with the 2K Fun Run following the timed races, approximately at 11:30 a.m. All races finish in front of the Nature Center’s Interpretive Center. All half marathon finishers will receive a race medallion, and awards will be given to the top three overall winners and age division winners in the 5K, 10K and half marathon. All ages welcome to run in the 2K Fun Run but awards will only be given to ages 12 and under. The 2K is free and is a great race for the family to run together. We are always thrilled to bid farewell to winter and embrace the signs of summer, especially when seasonal businesses re-open their doors. We had a chance to run down the river about 35 minutes and pay a visit to this fantastic ice cream shop along the railroad tracks. They offer great sandwiches and...of course..fantastic ice cream, shakes and malts. This little shop is such a treat that even many trains will "stop in their tracks" to get a tasty bite. Flat Pennies even offers a caboose to host parties and other events. The story behind this delicious stop was also an inspiration for a childrens book entitled Climb Aboard by Susan Huppert. Spring Flood Run

Finally..the first sign of spring has arrived! The annual spring flood run is April 18th and soon approaching. Over the year's, the Flood Run has grown and gone thru many changes as one of the oldest and larger runs in America. The original run went down Minnesota highway 61 to Winona to help sandbag during the 1965 floods.

Through the years, many people avoided the traffic of Hastings MN and Red Wing MN by riding down Wisconsin 35. Now the run has grown to a massive number of motorcycles and to alleviate the congestion going into some of the towns, we are adding the original nostalgia run down the Minnesota side.

At Hwy 10 you can go left into Prescott or right to Hwy 61 and down the nostalgia Minnesota side where you get the morning sun and discounts at the many new stops we have added. You can cross the river at Prescott, Red Wing, Wabasha or Winona. Cross the river where ever you like, jump in where ever you like, just make sure to purchase a Benefit Wristband to show your support for the Children's Hospital.

Incorporating the whole Mississippi River Valley. It floods on both sides of the river. The Flood Run has always been a charity event. From throwing sandbags in 1965 to buying a Benefit Wristband to support a great cause! All makes and models welcome!

Our Romantic Getaway Near the Twin Cities

That's right, We had a romantic getaway near the Twin Cities!

Actually, we could call it a true "staycation".
Deb and I had a night last week with no guests so we decided to get away to this great little B&B called, the Arbor Inn. Yes we know that may seem crazy to you but it was awesome. We had actually never slept in our Garden Room and thought it was about time.
First we baked some fresh homemade cookies and then proceeded to check ourselves in. I built a fantastic blazing fire in our wood burning fireplace, Deb poured us a glass of red wine from Von Steihl Winery and we actually let little Munch come out and join us for a while. As always we had our XM Satellite Radio set to a romantic mood setting station.
After setting in front of the fire for a while we retreated to our cozy room. I am not really a huge "bath guy" but hey this is a romantic getaway so of course I would cozy up to my beautiful spouse and enjoy this HUGE, EXTRA DEEP, JETTED WHIRLPOOL TUB. I must admit that having wireless Internet is a real plus. Deb grabbed my laptop and to keep me in the tub extra long, we streamed a movie from Netflix. What could be better than a hot tub, candlelight, wine and a movie....lol... Well maybe a hot jacuzzi tub and hockey game, but that's another night. After our bath we decided to go out and have some hot tea and another cookie from the cookie jar. The fire was still going so we took that in for a while again and decided to turn in for the night.I was not sure how I would do on a queen sized bed after being used to our king size but wow was I ever surprised! The pillow top mattress was super comfy and the extra comforters were soft and warm. The Garden Room is surrounded by patios so it stays really dark, perfect for oversleeping and our guests have told us it is a fantastic room for a relaxing nap. Now we really understand why. We always wake up no later than 6:00 but snoozed until after 7:00. Since all of rooms have cable TV and this one has the newest flat screen, we brought our coffee to our room and watched the news for a bit before breakfast. You may be asking yourself if we enjoyed our gourmet four course breakfast that we always serve. The answer is HECK NO! The room, snacks, fire and jacuzzi tub were all great but that is where we had to draw the line.
That's the lowdown on our romantic getaway near the twin cities or as you may call it our "staycation" to our own bed and breakfast.

We always like to remind people how close we are to the Minneapolis, St Paul, "Twin Cities" area. You can truly be so close to home and yet relax and feel like you are miles away. We did and we were just through the kitchen doors.

Green Bay Packers Come To Prescott WI

We just found out that the Green Bay Packers are coming to Prescott to play basketball against some of Prescott's finest. Come and see the showdown and help raise money for the Malone Elementary Parent Committee. Here are some of the details:

at Malone Elementary School (during the craft fair)

Bird Watching, Snowshoeing & Relaxing at Carpenter Nature Center

It is that time of year again to find some amazing birds migrating up and down the Mississippi River Valley at Carpenter Nature Center . We have seen several bald eagles, trumpeter swans, hawks and rare ducks this winter. Prescott was fortunate enough to have a male Harlequin Duck arrive in the winter of last year and return again this year. Because the water is extremely deep below the bridge and doesn’t freeze, many birds have the opportunity to stop and feed. His arrival, along with others that use this migratory path, has attracted several birders to the area.
Crossbills have been observed this month at Carpenter Nature Center (website: http://www.carpenternaturecenter.org/), which is about a 5 minute drive from our front door. The center provides a unique opportunity to learn and explore the outdoors. With property on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides of the scenic St. Croix River, they are able to preserve wildlife habitat while also providing educational opportunities. Hiking and snowshoeing trails wind throughout the tall pines, oak savanna, restored prairies, wooded ravines, around the apple orchard, and along the river of the 425 acre main property north of Hastings, MN. Wildlife abounds in the restored prairie and wooded bluffs on the 300 acre Wisconsin nature preserve. With over 10 miles of hiking/snowshoeing trails, 3.5 of which are paved to accommodate persons with mobility limitations, you will see a vast variety of plant and animal communities. The Interpretive Center is located onsite and is open daily 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, offering hands-on exhibits and live animals for display. Hiking/snowshoeing trails, beach access, and the Interpretive Center are open to the public 7 days a week excluding: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Years Day. Admission is free!
We have had many guests that have been to Carpenter Nature Center for snowshoeing and have enjoyed the views and trails. Winter Wine and Cheese Tasting Time

Back by popular demand are the Arbor Inn winter wine and cheese tastings. Last year as we settled in for winter, we found some fantastic wines and cheeses (of course) from our great state of Wisconsin. Since many of our guests take advantage of the choice to have breakfast served in the privacy of their own rooms and a big part for us in having a bed and breakfast was interacting with our guests, we decided to use a little bribery to have a better chance to have some time to chat. What better way than with complimentary Wisconsin wine and cheese!

Last year we were introduced to a very nice wine from Door County. Von Steihl Winery has been making wine for over 40 years and they just keep getting better. We now have many cases on hand for our guests to try. We think you will be pleasantly surprised as we were to see what a great wine can be produced in this region. Right now we have Von Steihl's Riesling, Chardonnay, Satin Red and Cabernet Sauvignon. We also sometimes throw some others in the mix but really like to stick to wines produced here in Wisconsin. Be sure to mention that you read about our wine tasting when you make your reservation so that we can be sure and plan on it. If you are not a big wine drinker but love the idea of some evening chat, just let us know and we can surely find something else to wet your palette along with some of Wisconsin's finest cheeses.

Since we are still relatively new to this area, we are always open to suggestions of any other Wisconsin wineries or better yet, western WI wineries that we don't know about. Rumor has it that we may be seeing a winery here along the St Croix River valley in the near future.

One year in our Romantic Bed and Breakfast and still loving it!

Wow, already a year has passed for us in our "romantic" bed and breakfast.
I added the word "romantic", since we are still in love with our B&B and the romance continues to grow.

We fall more in love with our inn every day as we continue to pick and choose new improvement projects. We added new triple pane windows to improve the comfort and quietness of our already peaceful little culdesac. We removed the overgrown vines above the Silhouette Room's patio so our guests truly have a view of the stars from their private hot tub. We remodeled the bathrooms in our Silhouette and Garden Room. Beautiful new tile now surrounds the inviting extra deep jacuzzi tub in the Garden Room and the Silhouette room boasts a new tile floor. We have listened to our guests suggestions and enhanced one of our grapevine covered porches by adding hammocks. Additionally, we have dug a cozy firepit in the side yard with comfortable seating all around.

How could we have a romantic bed and breakfast if we had no romance? Well I am happy to say that even after working together every day for the past year we continue to fall more and more in love with each other as well. When we have an occasional night with no guests, we enhance our romance by going over to our own inn and soaking in one of the romantic oversized jacuzzi tubs or the outdoor hot tub. We are very excited to cozy up in front of the fireplace in the Longworth Room this winter with a nice botttle of wine. We continue to be inspired every day when couples pass through our doors and we can feel the love. Whether it's a romantic getaway to celebrate a 57th wedding anniversary or kindling a brand new romance, it's awesome to witness romance at it's best on a daily basis.

We love our guests!!! In just one year we have had more guests through our doors than combined over the previous 12 years. We contribute much of this success to our guests and their reviews and recommendations. Some couples we have only seen once so far but we continue to get updates about them from their friends and family members who they have recommended to us. Other guests have been here numerous times and we have enjoyed getting to know them more every time. Some so many times that we have considered naming rooms after them. (We love it!)

Call it romance or call it love..... whatever you want to call a relaxing, quiet, cozy, warm, private, love filled getaway.....that is what we will continue to create for you at the Arbor Inn .

Tree Ghost Hammock InThe Fall

Wow did the summer fly by. For that matter we can't believe that we have been here almost one full year. During that time we have enjoyed getting some great input from our guests about things that they would love to see us have. Many times we have heard "HAMMOCKS" and so the few times that we were able to get out we have looked around for one that would fit in here.

Like always we did not have to go far but just put it out there to the universe and our perfect hammock came to us. During Prescott days I looked out and saw a geocacher looking for our cache so I made my way out to heckle him while he searched. We got to talking and it happens that he makes high quality custom hammocks. I knew instantly that we needed to get one of these for the ultimate in relaxation.

Jake and Alison figured out perfectly just how to cozy up so we had to get a picture (or three)

So Kevin, with Tree Ghost Hammocks got the colors that we wanted and within a week we were relaxing under the grape vines, feeling like we were somewhere tropical.We loved our first one so much that we had to order another right away. This time we are getting a nice fleece inner lining for those cooler fall days. The fact that you can pick the colors and materials and support our local economy makes it all the better!

We just can't believe how it feels like Fall here in the St Croix River Valley. Knowing that it is not official but surely seeing the signs as the weather cools. As we see the rooms at our bed and breakfast begin to fill for October, it reminds us of how spectacular the color changes are here along the St Croix River Valley. The Great River Road will see flocks of people hitting the pavement to take in the beautiful vistas as the seasons begin to change.

Being a biker friendly bed and breakfast, we also offer indoor parking for our guests who will be taking in the views of the river valley on their bikes.

With the parents visiting from Colorado this last week, we decided to get out and go to a couple of places that some of our guests from the Minneapolis area have told us about. One of these places was only a short 35 minutes east of us. Vino In The Valley is the place and is truly a do not miss eatery in the Western Wisconsin, Twin Cities area. Much more than just an Italian restaurant, this place has a little something for everyone. We saw bikers, families, friends and lovers all enjoying the beautiful grounds. There are different kinds of lawn games to enjoy for any age. There's also a nice walking path that leads down to the river to enjoy either while you are waiting or after your Italian feast.

This would be a great dining option while visiting western Wisconsin and staying at the Arbor Inn Bed and Breakfast.

With the price of gas so unbelievable these days, this may be a word you have heard.

For those of you who have not, here is the basic definition or premiss of the word: (probably not found in any dictionary) Staycation: A vacation where one stays near their home and enjoys what there area has to offer instead of traveling far away to a different demographic.

This is something that Deb and I have really never done but ours eyes have been opened now that we are in Prescott, WI with our bed and breakfast. A while back we were at a local event and met people who have lived in Western Wisconsin all of their lives. We were thrilled telling them about all the great things we had found here in Pierce County and how awesome this area is. They all looked at us kind of funny and then told us that they had forgotten all of the things here that we had mentioned because when they went on vacation, they always went far away.
Now they are talking about staycations and we have even had people stay with us from right here in Prescott. There's no need to travel far. Just step through the doors of this Western Wisconsin 1902 B&B and let the stress melt away. Maybe after your four course breakfast you can head to a familiar fishing hole since you are staying so close to home. Then back to the inn for a nice relaxing evening on one of the covered patios or around the fire pit.
So whether your from Minneapolis, St Paul, their suburbs or Western Wisconsin, Prescott and the Arbor Inn Bed and Breakfast are the perfect places for your next staycation.

2008 Republican National Convention Hotel

No, the Arbor Inn is not a hotel right around the corner from the Xcel Center where the 2008 Republican National Convention is being held this year. We are however just a very easy 30 minute commute away. This makes us a great choice for people who may want there politics and to get-a-way and relax too. We are a nice alternative to a hotel stay but offer all of the amenities and more. Cable TVs in every guest room and secured wireless Internet should help you stay in the political loop at all times. So forgo the expensive hotel in Minneapolis - St Paul and make Prescott, WI your lodging choice for the 2008 Republican National Convention.
Oh... and we can't forget river view dining at Muddy Waters blues bar or fine dining at Prescott's five star restaurant, Confluence.

River Falls Lodging for Kansas City Cheifs summer training camp

If you are looking for lodging for the Kansas City Chiefs summer training camp in River Falls WI, look no more. The Arbor Inn Bed and Breakfast is the perfect choice.

Being from Denver, and of course being Broncos fans, the Chiefs are a big rival. We do think it is pretty cool though that our bed and breakfast is so close to River Falls which is where the Kansas City Chiefs are having their 2008 summer training camp. Being only 15 to 20 minutes from River Falls makes us the perfect choice for lodging close to all of the action. Why not wake up to our four course breakfast and then head out for a day in the sun and football. Then return for snacks and a nice cold beverage on one of our nicely shaded patios. Wake up the next day and do it all over again.

The Chiefs will depart for River Falls on Thursday, July 24th with the first day of practice scheduled for Friday, July 25th. Kansas City will hold a joint practice session with the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday, July 31st at UW-River Falls. Family Fun Night is scheduled for Saturday, August 2nd. The Chiefs will open their 2008 preseason schedule with a contest at Chicago on Thursday, August 7th. The club is currently scheduled to break camp and return to Kansas City on Friday, August 15th.

Last Minute Getaway from the Twin Cities and surrounding areas ??

Deb and I used to be notorious for last minute getaway plans. We would find ourselves in a nice new quaint town enjoying the local food and cocktails. Then we would decide to just stay instead of making the drive home. Being how Prescott, WI is such a place, where the local fine dining and fun bars can have that effect, the Arbor Inn can sometimes accommodate these last minute whims.

We supply everything you need for a spur of the moment getaway. Plush bath robes, so no PJ's needed, soaps, bath salts, shampoo and even a toothbrush and toothpaste when requested.

Our online reservation system is set up to not show same day availability just in case we are out and about so just give us a call since we always have our phones with us. Sometimes we even have a last minute special that you may not have seen on line.

B&B close to kayaking and canoeing

Being just four blocks away from the confluence of two large rivers, the St Croix and the mighty Mississippi, we are always interested in finding out about things to do in the St Croix River Valley area. Not only do we have two beaches within a short walk from our bed and breakfast, but also multiple boat launching areas. Our neighbors are quit the outdoors people and we are constantly prodding them for information. We thought we would post this letter that Julie wrote about one of their adventures last week just in case anyone was wondering about kayaking, biking or canoeing close to lodging at our Arbor Inn B&B.....

message: Hi John and Deb, this is your next door neighbor. Just in case your guests are outdoor enthusiasts, we just wanted to post a comment on the paddle/bike ride we took on the Red Cedar River and Rails to Trails bike trail on the 4th of July. All in one day, we made the scenic drive to Menomonie, WI with a couple of friends and our kayaks and bikes. We dropped our bikes off at the boat landing in Downsville, WI, then continues on to Menomonie. We kayaked from Menomonie, WI back to Downsville, WI, about 8 miles (2 hours) left our kayaks with our friends who were paddling with us, and biked an easy, and beautiful 8 miles along the Red Cedar Trail back to Menomonie to pick up our van and drive it back to Downsville to pick up our friends and load our kayaks back on the van. There was a great sandy area across from a high sand bank near the end of the paddle where we landed our kayaks for a picnic lunch we had brought along. The paddling portion is a nice easy paddle for beginners. It was a fantastic outing, and the first river paddle for our friend, Sue, who loved it. This activity is less than an hour away taking State Hwy. 10 from Prescott to Ellsworth, and Hwy 72 from Ellsworth to Downsville, and Hwy. 25 from Downsville to Menomonie.We're so glad to have you as neighbors and friends. Hopefully we can find the time in the near future to do this activity with you.

What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a gps unit. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the Internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.

How do you pronounce Geocaching?
You pronounce it Geo-cashing, like cashing a check.
Are there any other names for Geocaching?
The word Geocaching broken out is GEO for geography, and CACHING for the process of hiding a cache. A cache in computer terms is information usually stored in memory to make it faster to retrieve, but the term is also used in hiking/camping as a hiding place for concealing and preserving provisions.

What is a GPS device?

A GPS unit is a electronic device that can determine your approximate location (within around 6-20 feet) on the planet. Coordinates are normally given in Latitude and Longitude. You can use the unit to navigate from your current location to another location. Some units have their own maps, built-in electronic compasses, voice navigation, depending on the complexity of the device. You don't need to know all the technical mumbo jumbo about GPS units to play Geocaching. All you need to do is be able to enter what is called a "waypoint" where the geocache is hidden.

Once you enter the coordinates (waypoint), you let your GPS lead the way and find the cache. Sound easy?

HA! Sometimes it is and sometimes you will be scratching your head. A cache container can be anything from a nice big box to a magnetic container the size of a pencil eraser.

Why are you blogging of Geocaching you might ask?

Well we have been caching since 2001 and are addicts. Since we don't get out as much now that we have the Arbor Inn, we would love to spread the word about this great activity. We also have a cache placed on our property and some of our guests have had lots of fun watching geocachers search for it during breakfast or while they are relaxing on the side porch. There are some great caches here in Prescott, as well as many, many close by.

Common B&B Questions

Is it your first time at a bed & breakfast and you are a little nervous about what to expect? Let us put your mind at ease. There are many misconceptions out there that we would like to address. Every bed and breakfast is a little different, but we thought we would at least clear up a couple of misconceptions that we hear often from our first time guests.

MISCONCEPTION #1: We have to be home at a certain time and check in with the innkeepers.
THE ARBOR INN REALITY: Every guest gets 2 keys, one for their private room and one for the front door of the inn. Each guest is welcome to come and go as they please. We do, of course, ask that you keep the noise level to a reasonable tone when entering the inn at a late hour as a courtesy to the other guests.
MISCONCEPTION #2: The innkeepers live in the same house and will put a damper on your privacy.
THE ARBOR INN REALITY: The innkeepers at The Arbor Inn (namely us, John & Deb) have their own separate living space, but are always available at the push of a button if you need something to help make your get-a-way complete. We love to chat with guests and exchange stories and ideas and are always up for great conversation but we retreat to “the other side” in order to allow our guests the privacy they came here for.
MISCONCEPTION #3: We will have to sit in the dining room and eat with all the other guests and might feel awkward doing that.
THE ARBOR INN REALITY: Here at The Arbor Inn we offer a choice of eating areas. If you are visiting us because you love to hear about other peoples travel and adventure, please join us in the dining room and hopefully you will be joined by other guests. If life outside our inn is very hectic and loud and you would just like to be reclusive, we respect that need also. We will deliver breakfast to your room so you can eat in private. The last choices we offer (weather permitting) are our covered porches.

Inclement weather delays installation of platform beneath Highway 61 Mississippi River bridge in Hastings

Single lane traffic planned next two Saturdays

ROSEVILLE, Minn. - Inclement weather has delayed progress on the installation of a platform beneath the deck of the Highway 61 Mississippi River bridge at Hastings. In order to complete the preliminary setup, crews will work Saturday, April 27 and Saturday, May 3.

During the weekend work, traffic across the bridge will be restricted to a single lane controlled by a signal system. The temporary platform will be used to support equipment and workers during the maintenance and painting project this year on the bridge. Motorists should expect delays during the work and should use alternate routes if possible.

The painting and repair project on the bridge began Monday, April 14 with the installation of a temporary signal system at Highway 55 and Dakota County Road 42. The signal will smooth traffic flow by improving left-hand turns from Highway 55 onto County Road 42 and from County Road 42 to Highway 55. Repairs also are underway on abutments, piers and beams beneath the south end of the bridge with completion in early May.

Reconstruction and strengthening of the southbound shoulder of Highway 61 north of the bridge began Monday, April 21 and the right lane of southbound Highway 61 will remain closed until the shoulder is rebuilt in early May.

The maintenance and painting project includes painting all steel members of the bridge from below the bridge deck to 10 feet above the deck; repairing the sidewalk, curb and a portion of the deck; replacing expansion joints in the deck, and removing, repairing and reinstalling bearings on several of the piers.

NOTE: Beginning the week of May 12, traffic will be restricted to a single lane across the bridge controlled by a signal system until the end of August.

The bridge on Hwy 61 is under repair this summer. We thought we would pass along some info just in case anyone was concerned. Although our B&B is only 10 minutes from Hastings, getting to The Arbor Inn from the north will not be impacted as you turn on Hwy 10 a couple of miles before the Hastings Bridge. If you are coming from the south, you could cross the river in Redwing and take the scenic ride up the Wisconsin side of the Great River Road on Hwy 35.

Preliminary work to install a platform beneath the deck of the Highway 61 Mississippi River bridge at Hastings will require single lane traffic across the bridge weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Friday, May 2. The temporary platform will be used to support equipment and workers during the maintenance and painting project this year on the bridge. Motorists will encounter delays during the set up as traffic is restricted to a single lane across the bridge controlled by a signal system.
The painting and repair project scheduled on the bridge began Monday, April 14 with the installation of a temporary signal system at Highway 55 and Dakota County Road 42. The signal will smooth traffic flow by improving left-hand turns from Highway 55 onto County Road 42 and from County Road 42 to Highway 55. Repairs also are underway on abutments, piers and beams beneath the south end of the bridge with completion in early May.

2008 FLOOD RUN

The 43rd Flood Run will be "running" right thru Prescott! Saddle up your Harleys and join in the excitement. The run begins in Lake St Croix Beach at The Beach Club and heads south thru the entire Mississippi River Valley. Riders can travel on Hwy 61 thru Minnesota or the scenic Hwy 35 on the Wisconsin side. Gluten-Free B&B

Does your bed and breakfast accommodate special diets you ask? The answer is a big YES! We were recently put to the test by a guest who had Celiac Disease. Not only did she need to be gluten free but was very sensitive to a number of things. Just when we would think we were ok with a recipe, we would double check with her on the ingredients and, oops something wouldn't work. We loved it! Truly we did as this was a great learning experience and challange. It's very easy to fall into the same recipes that taste great and people love so you stick with them. This allowed us to try some new things and see that gluten-free is not a bad word. In fact Deb made some brownies that were so good they almost disapeared before they got set out for the guests.

Birdwatching: Eagles Over Prescott

Did you know that Prescott Wisconsin is a premier location for many types of birdwatching? Well it's true! Especially EAGLES. The cold surely has not kept these guys from settling down into this fantastic fishing area for them. From November thru March is a fantastic time to get up close with these amazing creatures.

We, at the Arbor Inn ( http://www.thearborinn.com/ ) are no bird pros but just love to walk down along the St Croix River and watch these guys. Amazed at just how close we can actually get without even spooking them.

You can also head up to Freedom Park( http://www.freedomparkwi.org/ ) and look through their free binoculars to watch them on the river or in flight. they also have lots of information there for learning more. We see lots of birders on our walks who are always helpful in pointing out other neat, even very rare species of other birds who choose to make a stop in Prescott.

Why not make a relaxing trip to a first rate B&B, enjoy a day or two of great birding and get pampered with an in-house massage before our nightly wine and cheese tasting. You won't have to work like the eagles do for our fresh baked goods and four course breakfast.

Our new little puppy has arrived and just loves meeting our guests. Although he is not allowed in to the Inn part of our property, he does make appearances whenever requested. He hangs out in our owners quarters and awaits other traveling canines who are crate trained and get along well with others to have sleepovers. That's right! We allow guests to bring along their puppies who get to stay overnight in the owners quarters. Munch, our little Yorkie-Poo will keep then entertained and we will keep them fed and warm.
